The Haus Schminke in Löbau, Saxony, is one of the most remarkable dwelling houses of the 20th century in the world and is regarded as being the most important work relating to domestic buildings by the Architect Hans Scharoun.
The Stiftung Haus Schminke (Haus Schminke Foundation) has made it their mission to preserve this outstanding architectural monument as a testimony of the 'new architecture" for future generations and to make it the cultural meeting place of architecture and art enthusiasts from around the world.
The officially accredited Stiftung Haus Schminke took over the sponsorship for this architectural memorial from the municipality of Löbau in May 2009. The foundation is fully committed to the goals of preserving the Haus Schminke and fulfilling
its needs as a cultural institution. In the use of its funds, the foundation autonomously decides how current needs can most effectively be met.
In addition to preservation measures, a principal goal of the foundation is to open the house to the public, providing attractive opportunities for its use as a site for cultural events. Thematic guided tours, exhibitions and the unique opportunity to "stay overnight" are inteded to appeal to individual tourists, interested in architecture and art. All these attractions are in line with the goal of ensuring the operation and maintenance of the house on economically reasonable terms and in accordance with the memorial protection requirements.
The foundation sees a further task in studying the Haus Schminke scientifically. Based on existing documentations and research findings, lost furniture and equipment shall be reconstructed.
As the founders, the city of Löbau and the Hess AG (corporation/ PLC) established the basis for preserving Scharoun's "favourite house" as a culturally valuable heritage, findig meaningful uses for it, studying it scientifically and making it accessible to the public. In order to realize its manifold tasks the foundation is dependent on external donations from companies, public and private institutions as well as private individuals.
