The Haus Schminke in Loebau, Saxony, is globally one of the most remarkable dwelling houses of the 20th century and is regarded as being the main works relating to private house buildings by the Architect Hans Scharoun.
The Stiftung Haus Schminke (a charitable foundation) has made it their mission to preserve this outstanding architectural monument as a testimony of the 'new architecture" for future generations and to make it the cultural meeting place of architectural and art enthusiasts from around the world.
The officially recognized Stiftung Haus Schminke took the sponsorship for this architectural memorial from the municipality of Loebau in May 2009. The future focus will be to get full marks for the preservation and needs of the Haus Schminke. With regards to the use of its funds, the foundation acts self-determined which means providing purposeful procedures while observing current needs.
Besides preservation measures, it is a principal task that the foundation makes the house open to the public, based on an attractive cultural utilization conception. Relevant guided tours, exhibitions and a special "stay overnight" offer shall address to individual tourists who are interested in architecture and arts. All these offers are in line with the ambition to ensure operation and maintenance which always is both, in accordance with memorial protection and economically reasonable.
The foundation sees a further task in studying the Haus Schminke scientifically. Based on obtained insights and existing documentations, lost furniture and equipment shall be reconstructed.
The city of Loebau and the Hess AG (corporation / PLC), as the founders, established the basis for preserving Scharoun's "most favorite house" for future generations by making reasonable use of it, studying it scientifically and making it accessible to the public. In order to make sure the foundation can administer its manifold tasks, it has to rely on external donations from companies, public and private institutes as well as of private individuals.
