Extension of special exhibition “Growing up modern”

The exhibition “Growing up modern” in cooperation with the authors of the publication of the same name and the Weißenhofmuseum Stuttgart will be extended and can be seen in our house until the end of December 2024!

What was it like to grow up in an early Modernist villa or housing estate? Did living in such settings change children’s attitudes? Did these radical environments shape the way they looked at domestic space later in life? Were children in Modernist homes self-conscious about their avant-garde surroundings, or proud of them? To answer these questions, this exhibition looks directly to a group of four individuals, Rolf Fassbaender from the Weissenhofsiedlung Stuttgart, Helga Zumpfe from the Schminke House in Löbau, Ernst Tugendhat From Vila Tugendhat in Brno and Gisèle Moreau from Unité dʻHabitation in Marseille, who were as children the first inhabitants of iconic Modernist homes and housing. The oral histories collected by Julia Jamrozik and Coryn Kempster, are complemented by their contemporary atmospheric photography taken to resonate with the childhood memories of the inhabitants.

The special exhibition is sponsored by the Kulturraum Oberlausitz-Niederschlesien and supported by the Cultural Office of the City of Stuttgart and the Friends of the Weißenhofsiedlung e.V.

Open on October 3rd and October 31st

Happy birthday!

This year, the Schminke House will be no less than 90 years old. This calls for a celebration! From Oct. 1st to Oct. 6th, 2023, we are inviting you to a week of celebrations in Löbau with the painter Alina Grasmann and the sound artist Daniel Neumann. An ideal opportunity to get to know the house or to gain a new perspective through the artistic interventions. And best of all, admission is free for all visitors during our festival week!

For Haus Schminke’s birthday, the painter Alina Grasmann will exhibit paintings from her series "The Grand Buffet" for the first time, which directly refers to Haus Schminke as a residential building. In addition, sound artist Daniel Neumann will enliven the house with an immersive audio installation created especially for Grasmannʻs paintings and the exhibition venue.

During the festival week, Haus Schminke will be open daily from 12-5 p.m. and can be explored with our audio guide. As a special educational offer, a guided tour with the artist Alina Grasmann and the team of the Stiftung Haus Schminke starts daily at 3pm. And best of all, admission is free for all visitors during the festival week!

The vernissage of the exhibition will take place on Sept. 30th, 2023 at 7pm, where the exhibition title "The Grand Buffet" will not only be experienced visually, but also culinary. Participation is limited. Tickets are now on sale in our online shop .

For the anniversary, art fans can purchase the limited special edition of a picture from the series by Alina Grasmann as an art print. In addition, we are offering a total of 5 exclusive art packages with the art print by Alina Grasmann in a high-quality framing, the ticket to the vernissage and a bottle of our own apple brandy from Schminkeʻs meadow orchard. You can find all this now in our online shop .

New prices for overnight stays on 15.02.2023

We have thought about this a lot, but we too are massively affected by rising energy costs. As you can imagine, the Schminke House is not exactly a model for saving energy due to its construction and age. We have already taken countermeasures with a heating and ventilation concept for the days without visitor traffic. However, since our guests should enjoy the house warm and cozy, we do see some limitations here.

Starting on 15.02.2023 we will have to charge the new base price of 300€ incl. 2 persons for the overnight stay at Haus Schminke. Whoever wants to save money, can book or purchase a voucher until 15.02.2023 for the old price. On 15.02. the new prices apply.

We thank you for your understanding and send winter greetings out into the world!

Closing days in December 2022

The Schminke House will remain closed for visitors due to a private event on December 10th. From December 22nd to January 1st, we will take a short winter break and look forward to a new start in 2023!

Talking Scharoun 25.11.2022

Half a century ago, on 25 November 1972, Hans Scharoun passed away in Berlin. Under the title "Building and forming friendships and communities", we are looking forward to a special event evening with the experts Waltraud P. Indrist, Sandra Meireis, Ulrike Tillmann and Angelika Schnell. The evening will explore the question of which qualities and potentials can be derived from Scharounʻs understanding of architecture for todayʻs living. And after all, there is no better place to discuss this than in a building designed by Scharoun: In the living room of Haus Schminke, the guests will present aspects of the eveningʻs topic in short inputs and discuss them with the audience.

25.11.2022, 19:00 | Haus Schminke

Admission is free. Drinks can be purchased on site, a small snack will be provided.

The Zentrum für Baukultur offers a bus transfer from Dresden for the joint journey to Löbau. Interested guests can register for a place on the bus directly with the ZfbK . And for all those who cannot make it to us but want to follow the discussion from their living room at home: The event will be streamed on Youtube.
